Holiday Shimmer

December 22nd, 2015

Mary Kate and Ashley, aka The Olsens vs. The Olsen TWINS, have redefined fashion by creating too-cool-for-school hyper chic labels (Elizabeth and James and The Row), both of which I LOVE, but there is something mildly depressing about dressing like a monk – or Roman senator – during the holidays.

If you can’t sparkle during the holidays, then when CAN you sparkle?

I’m going for 1950s fabulousness (both in fashion and movies…White Christmas over Narcos) with a modern-day twist. In the race to the BIG DAY, it’s time for fashion’s full court shimmer.

To overcome my natural temptation to retreat from holiday madness by curling up by a fire and binge watching the latest provocative Amazon stream in flannel pjs (there’ll be time for that next week), I’ve decided to put on my big girl pants and go out on the town with Grace – as in Kelly.

No one owned the 1950s party scene or dress like Grace. The high society blonde from Philadelphia embodied beauty and style and manners and sophistication to generations of an infatuated public long before Kim and Kanye thrust their over confident, over bloated, over boobed and bootied, selfie sticks in our faces.

And the ’50s party dress is just so damn simple: Cinture waist. A-line skirt. Bullet bra. Bingo!

A shimmering sea foam treat with swirls in shades of fuchsia and pink by designer Denise Hajjar with enough of a modern twist to make the look totally today vs. costume party.

Strappy sandals are always the right choice for any holiday affair. Here a pair in gold to match and enhance the sequins.

Jewelry is key to being contemporary (vs. dated). I’m wearing a pair of earrings in chic clunk by favorite designer Lara Adrienne. The heft of the stones offsets the effervescence of the dress and keeps the look (and me) grounded.

But I’m not Grace Kelly (clearly), nor Kimye (clearly and Thank God!) – and no amount of sparkle is going to keep me from being me – quirky, honest and striving for balance in a mad, mad, mad world. Especially during the holidays.

So I’m letting my inner shimmer shine by…

Standing still…

Letting go…

On a rooftop…

At sunset…

Before going out on the town…

To send YOU and those you cherish joy and peace throughout this season of shimmer.

Happy Holidays!

With love and peace and honor,

The 1950s Holiday Look
