Orange Is My New Black

December 2nd, 2016

1010parkplace_one-among-many-960x625I found myself with a surfeit of free time last weekend, and decided to spend it on cataloguing and organizing my closet, hoping that the excess (of clothes, time, money, etc…) would somehow linger to those mornings when you need a little extra something-something to get out the door.

What surprised me was the amount of orange hanging from the racks in my private corner of the world.  I’ve never given much thought to orange.  It’s one of those one off colors, flattering on a (very) small percentage of the fair skinned population, hard to match, even harder to accessorize.  Yet there it is, front and center in my closet, frequently worn and oddly soothing, twelve months out of the year.

Orange is the only word in the English language which has almost no perfect rhymes. The only word in the 20-volume OED that rhymes with orange is sporange, a very rare alternative form of sporangium And who uses that in daily language?  Probably the same people who wear orange all the time…

I cannot pull off orange. I think it’s the only thing preventing me from committing a crime some days. I love things that come in orange boxes, however: they tend to be rather swell!
